Florentino Perez, Real Madrid’s president, declared on Thursday that the team would hold elections in which he would run. This marked the official beginning of Real Madrid’s electoral process.
According to a statement from Madrid, candidates have ten days to submit their applications, ending on May 23.
Having been a club member for 20 years and offering a guarantee of 187 million euros ($219 million), or 15% of the club’s yearly budget, which must be supported by personal assets, are two prerequisites for being considered.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Perez, who was re-elected in January 2025 for a four-year term without opposition, declared his intention to compete for office once more.
According to Spanish media, Cox’s president, Enrique Riquelme, is thinking about running.
The renewable energy entrepreneur requested additional time for Perez to possibly prepare a campaign in a letter that was published by many Spanish media.
“I didn’t ask for more time when I ran in the 2000 elections; I ran and I won,” Perez stated in a Wednesday interview on the television network La Sexta.
The electoral board will eventually announce the date and location of the elections if more than one candidate is running.
Perez, 79, would keep his position if no one else steps up, as was the case in the elections of 2013, 2017, 2021, and 2025.
The Spanish billionaire oversaw Madrid’s Galactico era after being elected president in 2000. He resigned in 2006.
Among other honors, Madrid has won five Spanish league crowns and an incredible six European cups since Perez’s return in 2009.
