Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, is expected to depart the team immediately, according to reports.
The 48-year-old had reportedly been thinking about his future at St. James’ Park in recent weeks, according to reports, and the decision came after talks between Howe and the club’s management.
Newcastle had a challenging Premier League season last year, finishing 12th after losing 17 of their 38 league games, which put pressure on Howe.
A devastating 4-1 loss to Bristol City in a preseason friendly on Wednesday marked his final game as manager.
According to people with direct knowledge of the matter, Howe was taken aback by Newcastle’s summer transfer activity even though he was aware that the team needed to sell players.
Howe had made the decision to stay at Newcastle earlier this year despite the possibility of player departures, but it is said that he changed his mind in the summer.
David Hopkinson, the chief executive of Newcastle, had earlier stated in March that the team was not contemplating a managerial change “at the moment.”
Even though Newcastle had spent almost £240 million on new players a year earlier, Howe’s annoyance is said to have grown after striker Alexander Isak left for Liverpool.
This summer, the Magpies have also lost important players: Anthony Gordon moved to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham, while Arsenal is still after captain Bruno Guimaraes.
Howe took over as manager of Newcastle from Steve Bruce in November 2021, and he was instrumental in the team’s comeback.
In addition to achieving Champions League qualification in 2023 and 2025, he led Newcastle to victory in the 2025 Carabao Cup, ending the team’s 70-year wait for a significant domestic trophy.
Last season, Newcastle advanced to the Champions League round of 16 before losing to Barcelona 8-3 on aggregate. Their league campaign fell short of expectations after placing fifth in the 2024–25 season, while their Carabao Cup defense ended in the semifinals.
Howe played in 179 Premier League games while at Newcastle, recording 84 wins, 38 draws, and 57 losses.
His 46.9% win percentage at the club is only surpassed by Kevin Keegan, and he has more Premier League victories than any previous Newcastle manager.
